The winning team receives a research budget at Wageningen University & Research worth € 25,000 and tailor-made guidance from a innovation broker. StartLife, a leading start-up incubator in the field of food and agtech, offers an additional wildcard for the StartLife Accelerate Program from February 2020.

About the Innovation Prize

Topsector Horticulture & Starting Materials invite startups and scale-ups that demonstrably increase the efficiency of food production in a greenhouse environment in order to be able to meet worldwide food demand in a sustainable manner by 2050. The challenge is open to start-ups or scale-ups that integrate innovative technologies into an end product and preferably work on sustainability or circularity.

The Prize

The winning team receives a research budget of € 25,000 from Wageningen University & Research to actually realize the innovation. In addition, the winner receives tailor-made guidance from a Horticulture & Starting Materials innovation broker (20 hours worth € 2,500). As an additional prize, StartLife, a leading food and agtech start-up incubator, offers a wildcard for the February 2020 StartLife Accelerate Program.


The winner will be announced during the Startup Afternoon on December 12 at the World Horti Center in Naaldwijk (The Netherlands). During this meeting established companies, start-ups and scale-ups from inside and outside the horticulture share their knowledge, network and latest innovations. Topsector Horticulture & Starting Materials organizes this meeting together with the innovation platform HortiHeroes.

Who can participate?

The challenge is open to companies with the following profile:

1. Start-ups or scale-ups;
2. With both economic and social motives;
3. Innovative technology integrated into end product or operations
4. Preferably work on sustainability and / or circularity

 Evaluation ends:  20 October 2019
 Winners Announced:  12 Dedember 2019


Develop a technical innovation that ensures that food production in the greenhouse increases with the lowest input in, for example, water and energy.
